I've recently bought an alesis multi-mix firewire 12... it worked on and off - the audio midi setup wouldn't see it unless i re-installed the drivers... once it did it would work fine, except sometimes it would not get any signal from the mixer... then when i turned the computer off and back on again, the audio midi setup would'nt see it...and after a week didnt work at all no matter what i did, i tried it both on my 17' imac and MacBook Pro... i sent it back....

now i'm looking for a firewire mixer compatible with mac and garageband/pro tools... i heard pro-tools doesn't accept 3rd parties, so if that's true it's not that neccessary because i have an m-box...

any help is very appreciated... trying to record but have been stuck with this mixer problem and need to get back to work ASAP...

i've read at some blog about the 'phonic" mixer... but i dont want to buy anything again without being 100% sure this time.

  • your request is a bit vague, sound slike price might be driving you here, but maybe I can help a bit.

First off, Digi has ProTools setup to only work with proprietary hardware, so you need a Digi product or M-Audio (but then you need the MPowered version of ProTools). The Digi 003 comes in a mixer format, I believe called Factory, but its pretty steep $$$.

I wouldn't expect much out of an Alesis or a Phonics, generally speaking you're going to get what you pay for in terms of quality and reliability, so sometimes spending the extra $$ now will save you more $$$ in the future.

Do you need a mixer? Is it because you need the extra channels? Maybe you should consider a firewire interface (the Digi002 should be reasonably priced by now) and an external mixer routed in. IMHO these all-in-one solutions for mixing, preamps and conversion tend to be a little cheap if you're in the under $1000 price range.

    Your mileage may vary...
    • Hey... thanks for the replies...

yes, i'm looking for a mixer, more for garageband (that's also compatible with other programs; ableton etc.) and also because i need the extra channels. and something at a reasonable price, a bit tight on cash right now...

i will look into the Digi002 but will it work with other programs? garageband, ableton etc??? i'm just looking for something simple... something that will work easily between different programs... and i thought thru firewire this should be easy... plug in and play...?

      thanks,
      kristina
      • 002 should work with most any other program, can't speak for garageband. Firewire is a good audio solution, it's not plug and play though, if you're referring to how some USB drivers will load automatically... you still need to install drivers and set it up properly in your OS. If you have a laptop and need more than 2 channels you are pretty well stuck with firewire for the time being anyways.
Not sure how many channels you need, but the 002 has 4 mic preamps and some other analog ins you could use with a small mixer. I have an m-audio 1814 with 2 mic pres and more 1/4" ins, it's an okay sound interface, I did get a Black Lion mod on it though and now it sounds closer to my Apogee, but that might price you out. The interface is around $500 and the mod around $300, but you get something really nice for that price.
      • i also need the mixer for live performance, recordings....

how is the m-audio NRV10? as i understand, it doesn't work with protools LE7, is that right??? and garageband?

does anyone here use a phonics mixer?

        :)
        • Please help us with your requirements:
How many channels do you need?
How many channels do you want to record at the same time?
How much mony do you want to spend today?

Sounds like any of the Mackie Onyx mixers would work for you.

Yamaha also has some mixers with Audio interfaces.

Behringer does also - but they have a rep for cheep - so I would check on that.

Have you contacted Alesis about your trouble?
are you the only one with this trouble?

GarageBand and Protools in the same sentence?

Why do you want to use ProTools?
Have you a long history with ProTools?
  • How much do you want to spend? How many channels do you need to record simultaneously? Are you an acoustic musician or an electronic one? All of these factors will influence your decision. At this moment, there are a few options. I think a frontrunner would be the TC Electronic Konnekt 24D. It is a VERY highly rated audio/MIDI interface, with a pristine signal path, great mic pre's, built in high-quality effects, and all for about $500 (...on Musicians Friend. $529 for one with an AKG Perception 200 condenser mic thrown in. Quite a deal. I think I'm about to buy this myself). The M-Audio NRV-10 sounds compelling as well. All those inputs sound really tempting (not as high a sample rate, though). And it's got some great functionality & routing options (plus the obvious live applications). The NRV-10 has the added bonus of being compatible with Pro-Tools MPowered (which is pretty much LE). There are some really good reviews on each of these units which I can send you, if you're interested. Outside of these choices, I would also consider the Presonus Firepod. I tend to be of the opinion that the MOTU gear, though highly respected, is a bit expensive when compared to the competitors. If you'd like more information, let me know.
