I purchased mine used off a friend seven years ago and they are STILL kicking! Mind you, these haven't been sitting on a desk for all that time. I've dragged them through countless studio and live situations and they have withstood all the abuse. On top of it all, Sennheiser really supports their product and the one time I needed a new cord, they replaced it at no cost! Plus, they isolate very well and sound amazing. Knowing if a headphone is truly flat is one of the hardest things to be sure of. Spend the money and get what you pay for don't assume for a second that just because people give you good reviews that you need not do your homework on how it is you should spend your money. My headphones, I love because of the way the drivers have been off-set placed and there open can design "they also sell the same model in a closed can design" which gives you a natural surround environment perfect for phasing which has always been a problem with mastering & mixing headphones. Also - I like the sennheiser line of "pro" not the consumer series. I have the HD250' for 20 years.... and I've had the HD 280s for a couple of years - and like them just fine.. for $150 or so. Just know you will want to have a few. For tracking and listening back I use my Sony MDR 7506, but I would never mix on them, they way overhype the lowend. I also replaced the ear pads with Beyerdynamic pads, they're more comfortable and isolating. About $95 A lot of people also like the Beyerdynamics 770s for mixing. I have never mixed on headphones, it always seemed skewed to me, however, some people really like it. These go for over $200. Under $100 I can't really recommend anything, they usually sound like crap and don't isolate. I also have a few pairs of MoreMe's hanging around for the artists who never seem to get how much wear they put on headphones when yanking them on and off. http://www.itrstudio.com/moreme.html They don't sound great, but they are cheap and have a great replacement policy.
