I have a number of stompbox effects pedals (delay, etc) which would be nice to use in live shows for mic'd instruments (e.g. flute). Currently, if I try a setup like:
mic -> preamp -> pedal (either by inserting it or from the direct out) -> mixer
it works to some degree but not very well, I'm guessing due to impedance mismatches between the various devices and perhaps other issues since this is not the intended use. So I'm wondering if this would work better:
mic -> preamp -> reamp -> pedal -> DI -> mixer
Kludgy - yes, but I'd rather buy one reamp than loads of effects racks. I don't have a reamp (so can't try this) and have never used one before. Keep in mind that this is not for recording purposes, but rather for live shows where it's ok if the sound isn't pristine. But the sound shouldn't suck either, have lots of buzz, etc. Basically, is there any merit to this idea, or anyone have other ideas how to accomplish the same thing?
Also, I imagine that these stompbox pedals are really optimized for guitar, but suspect some of them could sound good used otherwise. thanks for any input.

Re: Using a Mic with stompbox pedals?
Fri, October 5, 2007 - 10:46 PMThe second signal chain should work well. I've got the Radial X-Amp. It's pricey, but worth every single penny. -

Tue, November 6, 2007 - 7:52 AMJust picked up the X-Amp. I've only been testing it at home so far, but so far it's doing exactly what I want. Thanks Jory!! :)
Is Radial's other gear, like their DIs, especially good as well? -

Tue, November 6, 2007 - 10:07 AMAFAIK, everything they make is very nice. I only have the X-Amp, but do plan on getting one of their rack DIs at some point.

Re: Using a Mic with stompbox pedals?
Sun, October 7, 2007 - 6:41 PMYour are playing with 3 different LEVELs here.
(levels and impedance are related....
Mic level
(well, there is consumer level mics and pro level mics...)
instrument level
line level
-- and then there are 2 types of line level.....
consumer (RCA) aka -10
Pro (XLR or TRS-1/4inch) +4....
stomp boxes mostly work @ instrument level.
(does the mixer have a send/return loop?)

Re: Using a Mic with stompbox pedals?
Tue, October 9, 2007 - 7:17 AMIt's +4 line level. The reamp seems like a nice idea since it's simple, and getting a send/return loop from the house mixer to the stage often isn't an option by my experience (and in this case you still need to match the impedance between the mixer and the effects pedals). Being able to tell the sound crew "just give me a line for this DI" is nice :) -

Re: Using a Mic with stompbox pedals?
Thu, October 11, 2007 - 2:03 AMOh, you are talking about the house mixer... not your own personal mixer.
That is always a different story.

Thu, October 11, 2007 - 8:13 AMyeah - there are some situations where I'll have my own small mixer, but often not.
