Hello.
I bought an access virus C used. I hadn't used one before. Is anyone here familiar with this hardware synth?
The output seems to be really noisy.
I run 2 1/4 cables to my digi002 preamps and it hisses so loud.
I've tried using noise reduction plug-ins but that just destroys the high fidelity sound of the virus itself.
When I'm playing with it live really loud I can't notice the hiss with all the other instruments playing (even though I'm sure it's there)
It's kind of a drag when I record it how noisy it is.
My question is:
Is my Virus screwed up? Are they all like this? Any tips on reducing the hiss without reducing the over all quality of the tone?
Thank you everyone in advance, I really appreciate your insight here.

Re: Noisy output on hardware synth
Wed, February 27, 2008 - 4:23 PMIt's not REALLY loud
but when I record it
it's definitely noticeable.
Should it be like this? -

Re: Noisy output on hardware synth
Wed, February 27, 2008 - 4:30 PMIt definitely shouldn't be like that.
However, I can't tell you where your problem might be. -

Re: Noisy output on hardware synth
Wed, February 27, 2008 - 4:40 PMOne thing you can check is plugging headphones into the virus and seeing if you still hear the hiss.
At least then you can tell if it is the virus or something else. -

Re: Noisy output on hardware synth
Wed, February 27, 2008 - 5:11 PMWith headphones in the L mono output the hiss is reduced to an extremely quiet hum that is barely noticeable and wouldn't really affect a mix at all...
for some reason thru my digi002 it pronounces this hum significantly.
What are your thoughts? -

Re: Noisy output on hardware synth
Wed, February 27, 2008 - 5:12 PMonly when its turned up full volume on the master volume can I hear the hiss.
I think it's the same hiss, for some reason when it passes thru my preamps it's severely loud...
do you hear a very very quiet hum when you turn your virus up all the way thru headphones? -
-
Re: Noisy output on hardware synth
Wed, February 27, 2008 - 5:13 PMit sounds like very subtle white noise with a very high frequency ring that fades in and out.
it's terribly quiet thru the cans, though.
I wonder, is this an electrical issue?
hardware issue?
should I send it to the factory or........get better preamps........? -
-
Re: Noisy output on hardware synth
Wed, February 27, 2008 - 5:17 PMIt sounds fine thru the headphones.
I'm just an audiophile.
I can't figure out why it's so pronounced thru these preamps, though. -

Re: Noisy output on hardware synth
Wed, February 27, 2008 - 5:18 PMI'm sorry I've posted like 10 times
but this noise is driving me crazy.
I'll record a little bit and post it so you can hear. -

30second clip of my virus C.
Note: I've never had a problem with my digi pre's.
They are just seriously pronouncing this noise.
I have the master volume set half way.
And the pre amp gain half way as well.
Please, if someone could take a listen, and see what this noise is, I would really appreciate it! -

Re: Noisy output on hardware synth
Wed, February 27, 2008 - 5:27 PMwarning
it gets loud @ 11 seconds.
but the first 10 are just the noise
so watch your volume! -

Re: Noisy output on hardware synth
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 8:51 AMwhenever someone has 30 seconds
can they download the 1mb file and analyze it for me?
please?
just beware of the 10second mark! -

Re: Noisy output on hardware synth
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 9:19 AMit sounds like it may be something to do with the power on the virus. maybe try it on a different outlet.
that said it doesn't sound as noisy as I expected it to be based on your description. maybe try not cranking the volume all the way on the virus, this is bringing up its noise floor. then you can get some make-up gain out of your 002 pres. I am also assuming you are plugging into a line input and not a mic input?

Re: Noisy output on hardware synth
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 9:21 AMI listened. But I don't know what to tell you.
Yeah, there is some hiss. But I believed you in the first place.
I use a virus TI, but my outputs go directly into my interface.
You say you have yours going to a pre-amp?
I am not sure why you would need to do this.
There are many ways that hiss/noise can get into your system, such as:
-Audio wires parallel with electrical wires.
-Bad cables
I am definitely no expert on any of this. -

Re: Noisy output on hardware synth
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 9:40 AMI've got monster cables,
the virus is turned up half-way
and by preamps, I mean by digi002 interface.
Maybe it is the outlet......
I'll try a different one.
I know you believed me, silly
I just wanted to show you guys an example so you could analyze it. that's all.
it gets really annoying when I try and multi track........................
must be the electricity here.
thanks guys! -

Re: Noisy output on hardware synth
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 9:42 AMand yes
2 line outputs.
I have some more experimenting to do.
I love this synth so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
-
Re: Noisy output on hardware synth
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 9:49 AMAnother thing you might try is turning the virus all the way up, and turning it down at the interface.
See what that does to the sound. -
-
Re: Noisy output on hardware synth
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 10:01 AMIt's definitely the virus.
I can hear it in the phones.
That same hiss and ring.
The preamps are kind of noisy too.
What do you think of those power filters? -

Re: Noisy output on hardware synth
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 11:03 AM100% it's your electricity. What you're hearing is the hum of your hard drives on your computer and just the general planet earth ground hum at 60hz.
I had the same problem with my Virus A. What you have to do, is find a different circuit to plug your virus into (one that does not have any computers, TV's, microwaves, or LCD monitors), or, get the 3-prong to 2-prong power cable adapters and put them on everything in your studio that has a 3-prong plug.
This hiss and hum, is a ground loop. I spent months trying to figure it out and came up with two solutions. Spend $200 on a power conditioner to plug my computers, screens, and speakers into, or buy a dozen of these power plug adapters for about $20. I started with the cheap solution, and when I could afford it, I bought a Furman power conditioner for the studio.
The only downside to the cheap way, is that you're removing the ground loop on the instrument, which in reality could make the chassis of the synth electrically conductive, which could cause it to get damaged if there was ever a power spike in your circuit or it could just shock you for the hell of it, especially if the paint is chipped and bare metal is showing.
also, check your preamps to see if they have Hi-Z instrument input mode versus Mic/Line. This could help as it puts a db pad helping to remove the noise floor. -

You are loaded with great information.
I really appreciate it. -

Re: Noisy output on hardware synth
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 4:54 PMI'm not familiar with the Virus but is there a chance you have the volume turned down in software and cranked all the way with hardware volume. This would bring up the noise floor. -
-
Re: Noisy output on hardware synth
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 6:49 PMthat's what I was thinking... some sort of gain setting within the patch.
regardless... I vote for a power conditioner before switching to two prong plugs. also... make sure there aren't any lamps on the same circuit as your gear.
I typically try to keep all my gear on one circuit... with a power conditioner. -

Re: Noisy output on hardware synth
Fri, February 29, 2008 - 11:49 AMJeremy, this is what i did recently and it works like a charm.
What I noticed was my portable hard drive motor could be heard spooling up in my speakers as well as the ground hum. almost sounded like a turbo charger on a car.
the power conditioner is bomb-diggity as I have my whole setup activated with the flip of just one single switch and it also monitors the fluctuation of voltage going into the beast while keep it constant at the machine level.
Hell, it almost sounds louder now but that could just be a placebo effect. or, it could be that my noise floor is finally almost nill.
