... looking to get that Portishead vocal effect

Hello, all ...

I'm working on a track that demands (_demands_, I say) that really overly-compressed-and-slightly-damaged vocal effect that is commonly associated with Portishead ("Dummy" especially). I use Digital Performer 5.12 on a Mac, and I also have 2 PowerCore DSP boards. I've tried compressing the vocal a lot (putting the threshold way low and the ratio way high using DPs Dynamics plugin), but it doesn't quite do it, and I don't quite grok the compressor on the PowerCore, so I figure maybe i'm not understanding that vocal effect well enough.

Has anyone here done that sort of thing to vocals, and if so, how?

Regards,

John
