Hello, all ...
I'm working on a track that demands (_demands_, I say) that really overly-compressed-and-slightly-damaged vocal effect that is commonly associated with Portishead ("Dummy" especially). I use Digital Performer 5.12 on a Mac, and I also have 2 PowerCore DSP boards. I've tried compressing the vocal a lot (putting the threshold way low and the ratio way high using DPs Dynamics plugin), but it doesn't quite do it, and I don't quite grok the compressor on the PowerCore, so I figure maybe i'm not understanding that vocal effect well enough.
Has anyone here done that sort of thing to vocals, and if so, how?
Regards,
John

Re: ... looking to get that Portishead vocal effect
Wed, February 27, 2008 - 11:31 AMYou will probably have to try some drastic (_drastic_ I tell you!) EQ cuts and boosts, think along the lines of simulating a telephone and then play from there... I also have used a vinylizer plug-in (turn off the scratches and warble) to get something similar. -

Wed, February 27, 2008 - 11:32 AMI should also add that 90% of the reason it sounds so rad on Portishead albums is because Beth herself has a rad voice for that sort of styling. Something to keep in mind.

Wed, February 27, 2008 - 11:57 AMYes play some highpass low pass settings. and use a 1176 type compressor. Tape saturation would help as well. -
