Hi, I am trolling for more experienced opinions on an old topic, mixing DAWs with the internet. Work is purchasing a MacBook Pro for audio and video purposes (ProTools and Final Cut) but they are also expecting me to use it for apps like WebEx, Articulate and Dreamweaver which all require heavy internet usage. Not to mention the crap I view and download for giggles. I am supper paranoid about letting a DAW soak on the internet even if it is a Mac. My home studio Mac has never touched the web and ideally that’s the way I want to treat anything I’m using for recording. In theory everything should be ok and but my personal experience observes computers getting bogged down, applications acting quirky and other various problems surface over time and I think internet usage plays a roll. I don’t want the laptop to give me any hiccups when recording important meetings and seminars that run hours with out breaks. I may have to drop some money into fixing the Toshiba laptop for things like WebEx and personal use…
Some people say I have nothing to worry about. Others feel like I do. Is it a crap shoot?
Thanks a lot!

Re: DAW and the Internet
Mon, January 7, 2008 - 9:32 AMYou've got nothing to worry about. Really.
The only problems internet access can cause you are:
* viruses/malware/spyware
so be careful what you download/install.
* unexpected network-based attacks
which rarely work on the Mac, unless you're running an older version which has known exploits in the wild
* the tendency to install lots of crap software you find lying around on the web
which just requires a bit of diligence and self-control
Using your DAW machine for WebEx, Dreamweaver, and other purposes is not going to have a severe impact, nor will it affect your ability to use Pro Tools or Final Cut Pro.
The only other concern you might have is if you need to install an OS update for one app, but another isn't compatible with the newer. This type of situation happens occasionally, usually as a result of Pro Tools not being qualified for a more-recent OS update. But I don't find that to be a frequent occurrence. -

Mon, January 7, 2008 - 6:55 PMI think I've created some unwarranted paranoia. Thanks, I'll steer clear of the pr0n-ah-grah-fah.
