Hey, pretty old to recording, but new to mixing and mastering.
Some input/feedback would be awesome.

Re: Mixing Feedback
Fri, March 7, 2008 - 12:40 PMeverything sounds well recorded...
way too much boominess in some of the toms, esp floor tom.... cut some ultra low and some 250-400...
Some of the crash cymbals (and hi-hat) are too loud and the ride gets a bit lost.
Accentuating some 1-3k in the kick drum would help it to come through the mix when the sound is huge.
That said, you can pretty much hear everthing and like I mentioned the recording sounds great.
Your panning is good, nice balanced sound... really liking the warm fat guitars
As for mastering, it's definitely not up to commercial "loudness" but that may be a good thing. If you're not going for radio or DJ play then loudness should not be your main decision making factor while mastering. What exactly did you do for mastering?

Fri, March 7, 2008 - 12:55 PMI also wanted to say that everything sounds nicely separated for the most part....
I think you're doing a good job so far! -

Re: Mixing Feedback
Fri, March 7, 2008 - 3:34 PMthanks for the feedback!
As of now, the "mastering" was just a preset on Izotope's Ozone 3. I'm finally starting to tap into the mixing world, and to sit there and go through all my options with mastering was a little baffling. I know what you're saying with the toms. They hit you pretty hard. And as for the kick, my drummer hits so hard I have to aim the mike away from the beater a bit, so I can see why I'd need to add more to the 1-3khz on the eq.
We're running 7 mics (kick, snare, bottom of snare, high tom, floor tom and two overheads) so I don't have too much flexibility with the cymbals, and I don't think my tom mikes cardioid pattern is cutting out the high hats and cymbals, so I've got a little bit of a juggling act going on while mixing.
I've got 3 more available inputs, would you suggest miking the ride?
here's what we're doing now (minus the ride and high hat)

I really appreciate the input, I'd love to hear anything you've done. Keep me posted.
