weird problem

I've had the weirdest problem for over a year and I've just dealt with it but now it's driving me mad so .. I seek help.

I have these alesis mk1 monitors. they work fine with a 1/4 cable into my digi002 (stereo)
when I plug a stereo 1/4 to single 1/8 (for laptop sound or ipod etc) it will only work sometimes.
I have to balance the cable in this really weird spot inside the input of the monitor. and then it can't be touched.
only the left one is working now, and I don't even bother. it's this strange complex game that I can't figure out.
(but then I can replug the two 1/4 cables straight into the speakers no problem with pro tools works perfect.)

is there some kind of box I can get to plug the monitors into and then be able to connect them to the digi002 and/or a laptop source //etc. ?
would that be the solution?

sure, I use the mackie big knob for this very reason, you get 3 monitor outputs and 3 seperate source inputs, including a phono pre. The only thing is it isn't passive. The Presonus Central Station is an excellent choice for a great, flexible and passive switch, but it gets pricey, around $500.
if you want inexpensive and passive and a great all around value (without quite as much flexibility as the Mackie or the Presonus) definitely check out the SM Pro Audio M-Patch 2 www.zzounds.com/item--STOMPATCH2
For even fewer features and less money the M-Patch 1 can still be found for about $100.

Go to Radio Shack and buy a 1/8 stereo to two 1/4 mono adapter.

          right...
          I have that Y cable.
I have to ridiculously balance it inside the speaker input. it's insane. I have to push it in gently and make sure it doesn't go in all the way or it won't conduct. it's ******* ridiculous, so tedious, so delicate......it has to be just right.
and now the right one wont work at all. so I don't even bother trying to do this strange cable input balancing stupor.

so I'm going to try the ol switcheroo thing now.

Sounds to me like those female connectors are expecting a balanced male and you're plugging in a balanced male that is getting a signal on only part of the connector due to the Y-cable. From a mini stereo output, you should use Tip/Sleep (TS) connectors from the Y-cable or you'll continue having this problem. This is because you are using, by definition, an unbalanced signal. But when you put that TRS connector into the Y-cable, it's putting the signal on just the tip or just the ring, but not ring.

Switch to unbalanced cables and you'll solve the problem.

this is off offical web site for the m1 self power speakers

              inputs. XLR and 1/4” supporting
              both balanced and unbalanced cabling.
Polarity. Positive signal on “+” pin creates forward cone displacement.
Input Impedance. 20k ohms balanced or 10k ohms unbalanced.

so if this is correct the above cable should work unless you have not pushed the cable in all the way or
you have made the cable and soldered it wrong
the other option is that you are using a mono 1/8 adapter instead of a 1/8 stereo
here is a site that may help it has all the info you would ever need in hooking up gear the right way
              www.rane.com/note110.html
              hope this helps
