I've read in a couple of different places that mixing down with a master fader in pro tools has a negative affect on the audio.
my question is, if no inserts are being placed on the master fader, and all levels have been checked, is there any issue with simply deleting the master fader and bouncing to disk without it? Does the master fader serve a purpose that I should know about?
Thanks.

Je'si,
I am not a PT user, so anything I write should be weighed with that in mind.
That being said, I use Digital Performer for almost all mixdowns, and it has no master fader. Ableton Live does, but I don't use it -- i've never needed to.

John

DP does have a master fader option. Its not a default tho, but can use one if you need to.

Re: master fader necessary?
Thu, August 9, 2007 - 1:37 PMA Master Fader is not required unless you want to put inserts across the entire mix. That said, I prefer to have one on pretty much every session I work on and have never noticed any issue. -

Re: master fader necessary?
Fri, August 10, 2007 - 11:28 AMWith Cubase SX, the master fader acts sort of like a very transparent limiter against digital distortion, even dry without inserts. I've noticed that I can push my songs a little harder with very rare clipping of about 0.5 or 1.0 db's with absolutely no harmonic distortion or digital artifacts. In fact, SX's built-in channel limiter for the master is one of the more transparent ones out there if you hit it just right. If you go overboard and the clipping is more often than once every few minutes, then you have to re-do the mix and pull down the offending tracks or else deal with digital distortion. -

Re: master fader necessary?
Mon, August 13, 2007 - 11:27 AMUsing a Master Fader in Pro Tools has no effect on the audio - in fact, all that you're doing when you 'show' a master fader is making it visible in the mixer. It's technically there at all times, even if you can't see it.
