Hey all,

Another problem, whew!

I use a novation ReMOTE 25 LE USB midi keyboard controller, primarily with Cubase SX 3.

All well and good, but i get a pretty significant lag between hitting a note and hearing the sound from the VST plug in it's connected too (in Cubase). Makes it impossible to play anything live.

Bleh, Any suggestions?

My setup:
Box: Dell Dimension 8300 - 2.6 Gighz
Video Card: Nvidia GeForce FX 5200
Monitor: SyncMaster 941bw
Audio Card: SoundBlaster Live!
External Audio Device: Tascam US-122

  • you're problem is right there in your equipment list. Soundblaster sound card. Upgrade ASAP. the latency you are hearing is not midi latency, its audio latency.

In Cubase, go to Device Setup, find the sound card in the list of Asio devices, then open up its Control Panel. Drop the sample rate as low as you can so that you have approx 11-24 ms of latency, that should help your midi problem. But, because SoundBlaster is not a pro card, you will probably experience major audio problems like clicks, pops, or even total audio dropout.

#1 priority, get a new sound card asap, this problem will not go away. All you can do is find a balance between midi latency and sound clicks and pops.

For a cheap PCI soundcard option, look at the Echo devices as well as Emu, they are both ASIO devices with great latency compensation, they just lack the quality Pre-Amps of boutique soundcards. Try to get PCI too, USB devices can have a little latency in them also.
    • yeah for sure and also since it is a consumer rated sound card you wont get as much dynamic range out of it either (you want + 4 dbu output level not +10 dbv liek the soundblaster most likely has). if you want something in that price range I would go for an Emu sound card ...something like the 0404 is only 99usd and sounds pretty darn nice..i have one for recording dj mixes on my pc.
