Howdy. I just came into at least temporary posession of some CSI MDM-ta3 monitors, and I was wondering if anybody would have any information about these things or could suggest a place to start looking. Please don't say "google", cuz I already tried and got nothing. Thanks for any info you might provide.

Re: Monitor question
Mon, July 18, 2005 - 12:50 AMA bit of digging turned up an address in Oakland, CA for E.M Long Associates. E.M Long is Edward M. Long, who started Calibration Standard Instruments (CSI). Long also invented Time-Align, which is a method of ensuring that crossovers keep the sound in-phase and coherent. (Bag End is one of the more prevalent Time-Align licensees.)
Long's address (as of November 1995) is E. M. Long Assoc., 4107 Oakmore Rd., Oakland, CA 94602
I was unable to find them listed in the phone book, however.
I did search for him in the USPTO's database and came up with two patents:
#4,481,662 - Method and apparatus for operating a loudspeaker below resonant frequency
#4,361,736 - Pressure recording process and device
The newer patent, issued January 7, 1982, is for what is referred to as ELF, for subwoofers, and was issued to Long (at the same address as I included already) and Ron Wickersham of Santa Rosa, CA. I tracked Ron to this site:
www.alembic.com/family/history.html
www.alembic.com/family/elect.html
Ron would likely be a good source of information, I would guess.
The older patent is for Time-Align, and was issued to both Long and Wickersham (same addresses) on December 7, 1979.
Then, I searched for the address. Apparently, the house has sold at least once in recent years:
www.braudy.com/about/oakmore.shtm
Offered at $749,000 - SOLD FOR $880,000 WITHIN 10 DAYS
Since we know the address doesn't work, I'd try calling Ron Wickersham and seeing what he can tell you.
Incidentally, that was all found with Google in about 15 minutes. -

Tue, July 19, 2005 - 10:15 AMThanks. I'd found the Alembic reference, but little beyond, except a couple of studios mentioning that they had them.

Re: Monitor question
Fri, September 7, 2007 - 12:32 PMHi Oogie,
Have you found out anything else about the MDM-TA3? do you still have them? I have a pair that need repair badly and don't know where to start looking for parts. Any clue?

Re: Monitor question
Fri, September 7, 2007 - 12:51 PMWow, this is a funny thread to resurrect, since I only slightly remember posting it.
What's INCREDIBLY ironic is that I am now friends with Ron Wickersham and was just up at Alembic on Tuesday night, since my server was colo'd on his network connection for the past 4 months.
I guess that if you need more info, I could ask Ron for you!
But you could call Alembic and ask Ron, too. He's very friendly. He's almost never in before 2pm. -

Re: Monitor question
Fri, September 7, 2007 - 2:21 PMThanks Jory! I saw Alembic's site when I googled E. M. Long and Calibration Standard Instruments. That's how I came upon this thread as well.
I will give Ron a call, but knowing how fast I do things you might be talking to him before I do...
Thanks again for the tip! -

Re: Monitor question
Mon, November 16, 2009 - 1:19 AMHi guys,
I came across this trying to find info for replacement drivers for my MDM TA2.
If anyone has any replacement info please post it up. It's a 6 1/2 inch driver.
Would most higher end 6 1/2 speakers work?
On a side note. I have a pair of MDM TA3 I am going to sell. One of the mid/bass drivers needs to be replaced but they are otherwise in pretty good shape.
Cheers,
Danny
