2.16 GHz and 2G of RAM should be fine (that's what I have on a MBP), but take a look at the Pro Tools system requirements just to double-check everything:
    www.digidesign.com/index.cfm

For example: MacOS 10.4.10 is flagged as not supported. No idea if you have 10.4.10 or if that's part of the problem, of course. There are also performance tuning guidelines in the Pro Tools documentation, although for 1-2 tracks the default settings would generally be ok.

Are you running your session's audio off a firewire drive, or do you have all the audio going to the main drive where PT is installed? If you don't have an external firewire drive, that's your problem right there. PT doesn't like trying to process audio on the same drive where the application lives.

do you have any other programs running that aren't required for your project? if so, close them.

protools getting started guide with tell you all of this...also I recommend buying or downloading the pro tools method one training dvd, it's packed with use full information. I'm a total newb as well but I read the started guide countless times and have started watching this method one dvd every day and trying to apply it somehow and beacause of this my understanding is growing every day. Over all pro tools is as easy as they come for daw programs, I use logic for producing and that can make you want to pull your hair out at times but, everything makes sense in a simple way in pro tools. all you need to know is the signal flow (how the internal routing works, etc..) and it becomes easier. peace

This is the correct advice, although PT should still be able to work ok from the internal drive for a small number of tracks on a system like this, so I suspect something else is the main cause. On my comparable Mac, I have several projects with 20-30 tracks that run just fine from the internal drive. That said, using an external firewire/sata (NOT USB!) drive is definitely recommended.
